Freediving | Yoga | NeuroConservation

We are excited to offer this one.

We have been flirting with the idea of putting on a Humpback Whale Trip for a few years now, but didn’t want to rush it. Why? We are trying to find our balance between offering “spectacle experiences”, and sticking to our core curriculum. This means we never want to offer trips where the only focus is the spectacle, and everything else is lost in translation.

Yet as it would happen, we fell into a collaboration with Blue Water Retreat- and the vibe (and ethics) matched. So our first Tonga trip will feature respectful interactions, expert knowledge, and a special emphasis on humility. Freediving teaches us to interact alongside nature, rather than attempt to overcome it or conquer it. We can learn an immense amount from the creatures that call the ocean home, and on this expedition we will be sure to ask all of the right questions.

And don’t worry, we will do lots of freedive training while we’re out there. The condition for it are exceptional. While the regulations around swimming with the Humpbacks limit our opportunities to dive deep, we will conduct training session close to the resort and explore the reefs while we are not interacting with the whales.

What Will You Learn?

Nervous system reset in the wild
Practical tools to regulate stress and anxiety through ocean immersion, stillness, and simple daily rituals — built for real life, not just retreat life.
Ethical wildlife encounters
A framework for interacting with whales in a way that is calm, non-invasive, and consent-based — presence over pursuit, humility over adrenaline.
Engage your mind through nature
Learn how natural environments restore cognition, regulate mood, and rebuild resilience — and how to bring those effects back into daily life.
Sustainability as self-respect
Sustainability isn't just environmental — it's nervous system hygiene, attention protection, and living in a way that doesn't drain you (or the planet).
Low impact living
Simple nutrition, sustainability, less waste, more movement, and choices that respect the ecosystems we're entering.
Letting go as a practice of humility
Explore the art of release — physical tension, mental control, and the need to "achieve" — so freediving becomes a meditation, and life becomes more fluid.

Retreat Inclusions and Schedule

This retreat includes guided in-water sessions with humpback whales, supported by expert safety supervision and freediving coaching. Each day also features evidence-based breathwork and nervous system regulation practices designed to improve stress resilience, focus, and recovery. On land, you’ll take part in gentle movement, mindfulness, and neuroconservation-inspired education—linking nature exposure with mental clarity, emotional balance, and long-term well-being you can carry home.

We will be partnering with Blue Water Retreat for this expedition- they will provide all food, accommodation and local guides familiar with the sites and the whales. Our team will provide expertise on sustainable interactions, mental framework, and of course freedive training to complement the experience.

Your retreat includes:

  • All Food and Board: 6 Nights Accommodation and Delicious Food

  • Freediving & Workshops: Freedive training outside of whale swims, and expert guided workshops

  • Expert Guidance and Sustainable Interactions: We make sure to do it the right way

Accommodations

All rooms include private bathrooms, reliable hot water, and that calm, whale-like vibe we all seem to crave a little more of these days.

For our Tonga expedition, all retreat pricing is based on shared twin rooms, which helps us keep the experience intimate and accessible while working with the limited accommodation options available onsite. If you’d prefer a private room, you’re welcome to request one — however, due to very limited availability, private rooms typically come with a significant price upgrade.

We’ll of course make sure you’re paired with a guest of the same sex for shared rooms, and we do our best to match people thoughtfully so everyone feels comfortable and at ease.

Closer to the retreat date, we’ll send through the full accommodation details along with photos, so you know exactly where you’ll be unpacking your fins, resetting your nervous system, and settling in for the week.

Your Main Guide

Cam Hookey is the founder of Fluid Focus. He holds a B.Sc. in Marine Biology from the University of British Columbia and spent the first eight years of his career leading field expeditions focused on cetaceans, with a specialization in humpback whales. After years working in the NGO and marine conservation sector, Cam began to question whether protecting the ocean required more than policy and research alone. He came to believe that meaningful conservation must address the human nervous system — the source of both our disconnection and our capacity to care. He transitioned back into marine tourism as an ocean educator and wellness facilitator, integrating freediving, breath, movement and nervous system training with ocean conservation. Fluid Focus was born at the intersection of scientific training and lived experience, with a mission to support ocean stewardship by reconnecting people to themselves — and to the natural world.
